Josh Silburt (1914 – 1991) was a prolific artist, political activist and cartoonist. He struggled to overcome the poverty of his childhood and the old world immigrant ways of his parents to pursue the dream of becoming a main stream visual artist. World events of the mid-20’th century – the great depression, the second world war, the emerging labour movement and the cold war- reverberated through Josh’s life, taking it on a winding path that culminated in him fulfilling his dream. This book presents a broad collection of Josh’s work from his early days as a sports and political cartoonist in the 1930’s and 40’s to his later years as a landscape painter. It moves from black and white drawing to the full breadth of colour of the Canadian wilderness as Josh developed his unique artistic style.
